Is Aluminium a sustainable material?

At viiu, breakthrough technology runs deep through our ultra-slim sliding glass door design. Not forgetting the material it’s constructed from, aluminium plays a key role in achieving the breath-taking, lightweight and precise aesthetics the viiu brand is renowned for.

Committed advocates of sustainable construction materials and engineering practices within the built environment, we often get asked whether aluminium is a sustainable material. Let us explain.

Is aluminium a sustainable material?

Aluminium is the third most abundant element that the world has to offer, after oxygen and silicon. Although it requires a lot of energy to produce raw aluminium, every time it’s recycled its embodied energy lowers – making it more sustainable. Therefore, aluminium is one of the world’s most sustainable building materials available due to the fact that it requires up to 95% less energy to recycle it than to produce it. Lightweight, durable, highly flexible and able to be reused without any impact on its mechanical properties, its incredible to note that estimates suggest that approximately 75% of all aluminium ever produced is still in use today in some shape or form.

Aluminium: the only feasible option for ultra-slim sliding glass doors

As well as its impressive sustainability qualities, we also take a strong stance on aluminium use because of its remarkable lightweight traits. Through extensive research carried out in the initial stages of bringing the viiu sliding glass door to the masses, we discovered that aluminium cannot be matched when it comes to a door that needs to support a considerable amount of glazing weight. Thanks to the strength that aluminium holds within, these stunning doorsets are able to house up to 1200kg when fitted in a fixed pane capacity whilst moving up to 750kgs of glass with ease via smart motorised features.

Architects, suppliers and installers favour aluminium

Without aluminium, viiu’s floor-to-ceiling slimline aesthetics just wouldn’t be conceivable. Aluminium allows viiu’s framework to stay minimal, whilst enhancing minimalist interiors and complementing on-trend flexible living spaces. Expertly creating stunning “moving glass walls” that welcome as much of the outside in as possible, viiu can accommodate the enviable minimalist aesthetics that so many high-end professionals’ hunger for.
